We are a small grassroots charity working in a specific area of Kenya called Kipkelion. It’s a remote and mountainous place with a turbulent history. Around 300,000 people live there, most of them subsistence farmers, spread over an area of 1000 square miles. We work closely with a local NGO and with the local people to ensure that the work we do fits in with local needs.

One of our main focuses is preventing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). In the region of Kenya where we work, FGM is gradually being abandoned but is still practised in remoter areas. It is not connected with any religion – it is a traditional rite of passage for girls aged about 14. FGM does appalling physical and psychological damage to its victims and also usually results in the end of a girl’s education, early marriage and a lifetime of poverty.

Working with local people we organise a culturally acceptable rite of passage for girls which does not involve FGM and this has been a great success – every year, more girls are choosing to take part in this.

We also work to provide clean water and sanitation in Kenya, plus access to basic healthcare and education.

We have no paid staff in the UK and no premises, so all of the money we raise is spent on implementing the projects in Kenya. Our strong links with the local community ensure that we can identify the most pressing needs and focus our efforts on what people really want.
