APIE’s mission is to help change children’s lives through quality education, enabling children to break cycles of poverty, and become global advocates for peace and leaders for change and prosperity. We do this by working in partnership with local education practitioners to help improve the Rwandan education system.

What issue is APIE helping address?

Despite high rates of enrolment in primary education in Rwanda, there is disparity in children’s learning experiences and whether they make it through basic education.  Indicators of low quality teaching and learning in Rwanda include: low rates of transition from primary to secondary school; low enrolment in early childhood programmes; high grade repetition rates; low education completion rates; low attainment levels; underrepresentation of children with Special Educational Needs; limited availability of quality teacher training and use of corporal punishment

What we do

APIE creates contextually specific teacher training courses in early childhood education and inclusion, social and emotional learning and behaviour for learning and shares them with teachers across the country. The courses are based on our experience from our innovative model of education at Umubano Academy in Kigali, recognised as ‘lead school for peace’ in Rwanda. Umubano Academy boasts excellence in academia, inclusion, citizenship and well-being. It is the hub of the community and we love it! APIE’s vision is for competent and reflective teachers to be able to deliver a sustainable, inclusive and holistic education. This will increase accessibility of quality education, aiding progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
