Our vision is of an inclusive workforce where people with learning disabilities and autism have the opportunities to maximise their potential, be recognised for their skills, and be regarded positively and with respect. Our mission is to provide quality education, training and employment opportunities for people with learning disabilities and autism by promoting:
- Engagement, enablement, opportunity and progression
- Community presence
- The development of meaningful roles
- Cooperation with other organisations that share our aims and objectives
Since opening in 2017 we have gone from having 8 ‘crew’ as we call our beneficiaries, to 45, providing over 39,000 hours of training per year.
The main activities through which the crew gain experiences are as follows:
- Café – front of house
- Kitchen
- Catering workshop
- Outside Catering events
- Print Shop
- Fundraising activities – helping at events, etc.
- Provision of staff canteen at Jersey Police Headquarters
- Provide catering to Enable once a week
- A Tea room at La Hougue Bie
In each of these areas the crew gain new skills in the relevant areas, for example: working in a busy café; dealing with the public; dealing with till transactions; barista training; sublimation printing and corporate events catering.
The ambition is to progress the crew through the various stages of the programme, and as and when appropriate for some, full time paid employment with BSK or other employers.
It is planned that the crew will move onto paid roles outside the BSK team. Five members of crew have progressed on to permanent hospitality and retail roles outside of BSK, including one who is a chef at Longueville Manor. It is important that we are able to progress crew through our schemes to take on new members on an annual basis. We currently have 50 people on our waiting list to join the Crew.
