What is thyroid disease?

For such a small gland, the thyroid has an enormous effect on how the body functions, affecting everything from heart rate, circulation, metabolism, bones and even how we think and feel.

It is estimated that one in 20 people will be diagnosed with a thyroid disorder in their lifetime. They affect people both women and men of all ages, although occur more frequently in women and older people.

About Us

Despite thyroid disorders being relatively common, awareness about how they can impact our health is low. As a result, symptoms such as fatigue and changes in weight can be overlooked or confused with other disorders. Sadly, this can result in frustration, isolation and delayed diagnosis for patients.

Since 1991, we have been providing resources to help people across the UK better understand and manage their thyroid condition. We work alongside medical professionals to provide evidence-based information. Through our network of telephone contacts and patient forums, we offer peer support to help people feel less alone. We also provide opportunities to meet other patients and medical professionals at our regular patient information events.

We are the only UK thyroid patient organisation that helps fund research into all forms of thyroid disease. We also provide resources for GPs to help them manage their patients’ thyroid conditions.

We are here for anyone who wants support to live better with thyroid disease.

Why we need your help

Long NHS waiting lists and fewer face-to-face appointments post pandemic have resulted in thyroid patients becoming ever more desperate for reliable information and support. This is reflected in the huge demand for our services.

We receive no funding for our work and rely on donations to continue our services. With your help, we can continue to support anyone who turns to us for help to live better with thyroid disease. Thank you.

‘The BTF has been a good friend to me; reminding me that I am not on my own with my thyroid disorder.’
