Conservation through Education

The best people to save Africa’s wildlife are Africans. We help young Zambians – with all the energy and idealism of youth – to become conservationists.

Zambia and its wildlife need trained and educated people. The least likely children to go on to further education are the poorest in rural areas, but that is where humans make the biggest impact on the environment. We sponsor the brightest and most motivated students to continue their studies in environment and conservation. These children can then return and make a valuable contribution.

When qualified they can develop solutions and lead their communities to adopt them. As well as working directly in the field they serve as role models to show communities how to value wildlife and protect it. Your donations carry on delivering long after the money is spent. A truly productive investment.

How the Chris Fenner Fund helps

We work through partner organisations in South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi. These are the Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust (CWET) and Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ).

They have outreach programmes with local schools and get to know the pupils well. Those that have demonstrated a deep and continuous interest- a vocation – are the pool from whom our students are drawn. Once selected, the children are mentored and monitored throughout their courses. Students are well motivated to succeed as success is life changing for them, as well as beneficial to wildlife. So far there have been no drop outs from the scheme.

They can go on to do marvellous things. By reaching 12 Village Action Groups in over 200 meetings in one year, one of our former students met thousands of people teaching them about conservation and the value of wildlife. He helped plant 11,000 trees to counteract deforestation and harvest 3,000 kilos of honey.

Time is short, extinction is forever. Please act now – a Donation of any amount will help.
