Fair Shot Cafe is a social enterprise cafe and registered UK charity that aims to transform the lives of young adults with learning disabilities through specialty coffee. Fair Shot provides a year-long training programme in which young adults with learning disabilities can prepare for the world of work. Once they graduate, Fair Shot finds their trainees paid employment by partnering with forward-thinking employers and keep supporting all parties involved for the following 6 months.

traineeship programme

Every year, Fair Shot offers 12 young adults (aged 18-25) with a learning disability the chance to gain real-life work experience through our hospitality training programme. Their training programme is designed for people whose preference is to find a job in the hospitality industry but who lack the skills, experience or behaviours sought by employers.

It’s best to think of a traineeship as preparation for the working world. Unlike jumping straight into a job, they provide a forgiving environment where their trainees can take the time they need to grow into the confident baristas we know they can be.

During the programme, their trainees spend four days a week at the cafe and one day a week at our partner college to carry out the educational side of the course. At the cafe their trainees learn the ropes alongside a mentor and a job coach. From day one they’ll be on the coffee shop floor watching, practising and honing in on their coffee knowledge.

Over the course of the year, Fair Shot teaches a whole range of transferable skills such as effective communication, health & safety in the workplace, and time management. They also equip their trainees with a variety of qualifications such as SCA Qualification and Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate.

Following the programme, Fair Shot works alongside industry partners – like-minded organisations often in the hospitality industry – who are keen to carve jobs out for their graduates. Fair Shot recognises the work doesn’t stop there. Once they’ve matched their graduates up with industry partners, they keep supporting all parties involved for 6 months to ensure the best chances of success!
