At Heartburn Cancer UK we raise awareness about the link between persistent heartburnBarrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal cancer. Many people are unaware that persistent heartburn can be a sign of something more serious and we are trying to change that.  We are also committed to supporting all those impacted by or living with Barrett’s oesophagus or oesophageal cancer.

Why is it important to raise awareness?

Around 8,000 people will die of oesophageal cancer in the UK each year, that’s 22 people every day.  It is the 7th most common cause of cancer death overall and the 4th most common in males, but, in the UK, we have the worst survival record in the world with only 12% of those diagnosed surviving for 10 years.  Raising awareness can mean earlier diagnosis which is absolutely essential if the condition is to be found whilst it can be treated.

Raising awareness saves lives

Being diagnosed with either Barrett’s oesophagus or oesophageal cancer can be incredibly stressful and lead to many questions, both for patients and their loved ones.  We support all those impacted by these conditions as well as members of the public who may be concerned about persistent heartburn or other symptoms.  We currently have three support groups in the south of England and our small team receives contact by phone, e mail and social media from people throughout the UK.  We have recently launched an online peer support forum via a closed Facebook page so that, regardless of location, those impacted can have a support network of people with similar experiences and worries.

In the coming 12 months we will be piloting a mobile unit using a pioneering new test called The Cytosponge to aid early diagnosis of Barrett’s Oesophagus and oesophageal cancer which will help improve prognosis and save lives. It’s a very exciting proposition for us to be a part of that could really make a difference.
