Our Community
Flora Tristán is a community of people who took the bold step of migrating to Arequipa in search of a better life. While this has improved prospects for some, the community continues to suffer from a lack of self development opportunities: most of the mothers in the community did not progress beyond primary education, and more than half remain unemployed. Many children in the community don’t have access to adequate education.
Our work is focused on providing the community with the advice necessary for them to overcome obstacles and develop personally and socially. At HOOP we are committed to the all-round development of our families. We wouldn’t exist without the hard work and dedication of our staff and volunteers but it’s the Mums and their families who are the stars of the show.
Our Work
Our work began in the Flora Tristán English School in 2008. Wishing to have a larger impact in the community, a group that included school staff and volunteers established HOOP as a registered Peruvian non-profit organisation in 2012. Our five co-founders shared a vision for the organisation that would help ensure its work in the community would be meaningful, ethical and long-lasting. HOOP has continued to grow ever since; we currently work with 80 families and 153 children.
The promotion of, and access to, education is at the heart of what HOOP stands for. HOOP is an educational organisation supporting children, young people and adults living in vulnerable conditions by giving them access to quality education on their way to an independent and empowered life. We are convinced the most effective, long-lasting and sustainable way to reach our objectives are educational programs covering a broad range of topics for children, teenagers and adults; family programs to help families manage emotions inside the home, and community programs to provide resources to enhance the skills of people in order to generate alternative solutions to the problems in their communities. The diversity of our programs reflect just how multidimensional the topic of education is.
Our Projects in 2021
With the COVID crisis affecting our communities more than most, combined with the political instability in Peru, the way we worked in 2020 had to be rapidly altered to adequately support the needs of our families during this uncertain time. With this in mind our focus for the immediate future is on the following projects:
Ruwana – given many of our families incomes come from the informal economy, Ruwana is a social enterprise designed to give women in our community some ownership over their economic futures through the professional development of their crafting skills,
Distance Learning Support – given all of our children and young adults’ education is via remote means for the foreseeable future we are providing online support tools that facilitate and support their learning to ensure they don’t fall far behind at this critical time,
Composting and Community Gardening – run solely by our mums as a way to support their income whilst working towards a more sustainable way of living,
Covid-19 Workshops – with so much uncertainty combined with a lot of misleading information online about the pandemic, HOOP is running workshops to inform our families about a variety of topics from ‘What is Covid?’ through to how to cope with the continuing social isolation and arising mental health issues.
Furthermore, after dreaming for a number of years we finally saw our dreams come true when the first bricks of our very own Community Centre were laid in September 2020. The completion of this will show not only just how far we have come but will ensure that we can personally support more families by expanding the programs we are able to run. The future is very exciting for everyone at HOOP.
We at HOOP UK, want to send you a huge thank you if you are considering to support us through Charitable Travel. As a small grassroots organisation you can be certain the money you donate will go directly to the families we work with in the communities of north Arequipa
