Every project we take on helps BAME women to overcome one of the key barriers they face to total inclusion in all aspects of our society. For instance, our employability programmes aim to remove educational attainment disparities that BAME women often face when applying for jobs.

From the moment a service user comes to our door, or is referred to us, we provide a multi-faceted, expertled approach. Our staff team’s linguistic prowess (with 18 languages each spoken by at least one staff member) means that we can diagnose the specific problem the service user presents to us with. It also means the service user can more accurately describe the problem(s) they face, and therefore can flag up issues they may be unable to articulate in English.

With this diagnostic information, we can then provide multi-faceted support programmes for almost any issue they face. We have numerous service users who are referred to multiple programmes that we run, and whose journey to overcome their issues is carefully cross referenced between different programmes.

One of the most successful examples of this was a woman who was referred to us with Domestic Violence support required. Our specialist DV team helped her through the tense legal process her case merited, and then referred her to our employability team. The employability team enrolled her in an ESOL (English as Second Language) course and arranged for her to do IT skills training to boost her employment prospects. After her courses finished, our team co-ordinated some work experience with a local employer, as a first step into the world of work. Her confidence was greatly improved by this and, after her work experience finished, she applied for and attained a job with our Homecare team, working as a carer for our clients across Camden. She is still a regular visitor to our centre, and her journey is an immense source of pride for both her and us.

This kind of thorough, tailored support is what Hopscotch has come to be known for throughout Camden and wider London, and it’s a big reason why many of our service users come to us first when there is a problem. We have many multi-generational service users, with grandmothers, mothers and daughters from the same families all coming to our centre and taking part in our many programmes.

Ultimately, our vision is a society where all women are empowered, connected, well and safe, so they can achieve their full potential. We will keep working so that this vision is realised.
