Lizzi’s Luxury Edit: Stunning Sri Lanka

If like me, you were shocked to hear of the troubles in Sri Lanka earlier this year, you will be delighted to know that things have stabilised now, and Sri Lanka is open to tourists. The country has been able to buy fuel and there are no long queues at the petrol stations. The new president has worked hard to calm the situation and food is now plentiful in the shops and markets. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka has had a very hard time since the beginning of this century, with the Tsunami devastating the country and the Tamil Tigers fighting for recognition. However, the people of Sri Lanka are incredibly resilient and ready to move on.

What attracts people to this country? Firstly, the incredible scenery, from the beaches to the verdant mountains where tea has been grown for centuries. Wonderful temples and relics, ancient monuments and colonial architecture abound. The colours and spices you see in India are everywhere here, too. The food is out of this world.

Traditional Sri Lankan hotels are peaceful havens with amazing carvings and furnishings. Then there are the converted houses, made into boutique hotels and often displaying fabulous local art. In the southeast of the country is the Yala National Park where you can go on safari and stay in luxury tented camps. Incredible bird life attracts the most serious bird watchers. Did I forget anything? Oh yes, the cricket of course!! Sri Lanka is crazy about cricket!

The other attraction is the price, which makes Sri Lanka a cheaper option than the Maldives, so it’s perfect for young honeymooners. It does also have very high-end hotels and spa retreats.

Sri Lanka depends so heavily on tourism and is so eager to welcome visitors back. You will get a very warm welcome indeed right now!
