Midlands Air Ambulance Charity started in 1991 and since then, we have undertaken over 60,000 missions via one of our three air ambulances, or two critical care cars, making our organisation one of the busiest pre-hospital air ambulance-led services in the UK.

Our mission is to provide our patients with outstanding pre-hospital care and lifesaving intervention at the incident scene, before conveying them to the most appropriate hospital for their individual needs, giving them the best possible chance of survival and recovery.

As a service, we cover six counties within the Midlands, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, the West Midlands and Worcestershire. With a population of over 6million people and a busy motorway network bringing more people to the region, this constitutes the largest air ambulance operating patch within the UK.

We operate our three helicopters from strategically located airbases, RAF Cosford in Shropshire, Tatenhill airfield in Staffordshire and Strensham Services in Worcestershire. This means the maximum flying time to the patient is just fifteen minutes.

The three aircraft each carries a crew of three comprising a pilot and two clinicians – a critical care paramedics, such as Chris, and a flight doctor. The air operations team are tasked to major incidents and emergencies within the region, with 60 per cent of the missions undertaken relating to trauma.

We also operate two critical care cars, in Birmingham and the Black Country and in Worcester. The critical care paramedic on board are tasked to predominantly medical cases, such as heart attacks, cardiac arrests, strokes and respiratory issues.

Collectively we attend up to 13 patients every single day, and the main reasons for call outs include road traffic collisions, cardiac-related incidents, falls, sporting injuries including equestrian incidents and stabbings, but we are also tasked to a whole range of missions where the expertise, advanced clinical skillset, specialist medicines and equipment we bring to the incident scene can make vital the difference to a person’s survival and recovery.
