Mardi Gras 2022
New OrleansUSA < New OrleansDescription
What is Mardi Gras?
The Mardi gras celebrations begin just after New Years Day and culminate on the day before Ash Wednesday with a carnival. In French, Mardi Gras translated to ‘Fat Tuesday’, reflecting the tradition of eating rich fatty foods ahead of lent. In the UK we eat pancakes for tea, in Louisiana, they have a party. Find out more about Mardi Gras in New Orleans here.

Just steps away from the French Quarter’s world-renowned nightlife and distinguished architecture, find yourself strolling Bourbon Street as the sounds of famed jazz clubs, scents of Cajun cuisine and local cocktails tempt the senses. Discover gourmet food, including our on-site restaurant, Laurel Oak, and local crafts along the quieter streets of the French Market before enjoying Jackson Square’s street performers and the breath-taking beauty of St. Louis Cathedral – the oldest cathedral in the United States.

We recommend:
Café Du Monde
No trip to New Orleans would be complete without a visit to the world-famous Café du Monde for a cup of Café au lait and a fresh beignet, or five. We think it’s the perfect cure for any ailment, not excluding jetlag! Open 24 hours, we discovered that the best time to go for the freshest food and smallest queue’s is 5am!
Avery Island
If you’re a fan of hot sauce, take a day trip to Avery Island, the birthplace of Tabasco sauce. The only place tabasco has ever been made. Take a tour of the factory and sample some fantastic combinations of hot sauce.
Swamp Tour
Take a couple of hours to escape city life and take a tour on the Bayou. Either on a Pontoon boat or an Airboat, take in the amazing wildlife and get a feel for the natural side to New Orleans. Gaze at alligators, racoons, boars, and more. The Pontoon boat has a more relaxed feel than the Airboat, but both are a truly unique experience. To book this and other excursions, please contact us.
Mardi Gras Parades
Watch the parades through the French Quarter celebrating Mardi Gras and the start of Lent. And if you feel up to it, join the near constant parties in Bourbon Street.
Cuisine
Louisiana roots run deep inside a culinary wonderland drawn from French, Spanish, African, Sicilian, Caribbean, Irish, German and American Indian cultures. Add a dash of country comfort and a pinch of sophistication, and you’ve got a recipe for perhaps the best food on the planet. Our favourites include Oysters Rockefeller, king cake, beignets, po’ boys, jambalaya, and gumbo. We recommend trying as much of these delicious dishes as possible during your stay.
