About Richard House

Richard House provides 24-hour specialist care and support for babies, children and young adults who have life-shortening, life-limiting or complex health conditions such as heart failure, muscular dystrophy and cancer and offer support for the whole family.

Alongside their key services of respite, palliative and end of life care, they also provide holistic services such as music, dance, movement and art therapy, multi-sensory play, family activities, outings and bereavement support. They are the only children’s hospice in East London and have provided care to children with life-limiting conditions and their families for 20 years. Their services have been available free of charge to around 300 families each year across London.

Their purpose-built hospice, based in the ethnically diverse borough of Newham (East London), was London’s first children’s hospice and is situated in one of the UK’s top 10% most deprived areas.

For every £4 Richard House needs to spend on its vital services, £3 must come from donations and fundraising

Support for complex medical needs

Each year, the hospice supports approximately 300 families from disadvantaged backgrounds in East London caring for children with life-limiting conditions. The children are not expected to live into adulthood as they often have multiple disabilities which cause:

  • Distressing symptoms for children – such as seizures, muscle spasms, infection, insomnia and nausea.
  • Complex medical needs – for children with breathing and feeding issues.
  • Reduced access to play activities – due to the cost and availability of services for children with disabilities.
  • Reduced quality of life – as children and families can feel isolated and lonely.

Help where it's needed most

The need for hospice services are compounded by the poverty and disadvantage in East London, which can have a significant impact on the families Richard House work with, as:

  • The majority of the families they help come from boroughs with the highest child poverty rates in the UK: Tower Hamlets (53% – highest in the UK), Newham (43%) and Hackney (41%).
  • Newham, Tower Hamlets and Hackney have the highest levels of income deprivation in London.
