In the United States, 80% of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are unemployed. For too long, this population has been kept in the shadows, marginalized and forgotten. Inclusion Revolution, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, supports Rise & Nye’s coffee and ice cream shops to offer integrated employment, front and centre in our communities.
We provide secure, successful jobs to help our amazing team members form meaningful friendships with their peers; live independently; improve their public speaking, develop self-advocacy and communication skills; and feel valued and included by society. We celebrate and honour their special abilities!
Currently, we employ 35 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our flagship shop in downtown Sarasota, Florida, and we plan to open many more outlets. We see and experience the impact of our mission every day — team members are thriving and people who have maybe never spent time with someone with a disability are having their eyes and hearts opened. We’re ending the fear of difference and replacing it with the power of inclusion.
Our downtown Sarasota, Florida Rise & Nye’s coffee and ice cream shop employs 35 people, most with intellectual and developmental disabilities and most of whom have never had a job. We are amazed, inspired, and filled with pride every day as we work with our staff and see them learn, grow, stand tall, and bring joy to our customers.
Sure, we provide jobs, dignity, a place to finally be included, a place to be seen, a
place to be heard, and a place to let abilities shine. We know we help end the fear of
difference just by having Kelley be a barista and by having Nick make the beignets and having Caleb run the register. Here they are, doing an amazing job running the shop and loving the opportunity to meet people who maybe haven’t met someone like them before. We’re changing lives on “both sides.”
Julia, our morning cashier, really brought it all home one day when someone asked her what she liked about working at Rise & Nye’s. She replied, “Now I finally have friends.” I think about those words every day when I walk into the shop, and I fill with joy knowing that Julia has 34 new friends along with all of our customers who appreciate her, support her, love her, and lift her up to her rightful place at the table of belonging.
Rise & Nye’s has set an employment example for other businesses to follow. We hope
to initiate a hiring chain and inspire others to employ individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “Inclusion. Jobs. Dignity.” We choose to include.
