what is sarcoidosis?

Sarcoidosis is a condition where lumps called granulomas develop at different sites within the body. Granulomas are made up of clusters of cells involved in inflammation. If many granulomas form in an organ, they can prevent that organ from working properly. Sarcoidosis can affect many different parts of the body – its cause is not known and there is no cure.

Information

SarcoidosisUK know that sarcoidosis can be confusing, particularly for newly diagnosed patients. Our goal is to reduce uncertainty by providing clear, quality and accurate information about sarcoidosis to anyone affected. Helping patients to understand sarcoidosis is extremely important to us and something that we take very seriously. All of our patient information is produced with the help of trusted medical experts and is free for anyone to use.

Awareness

SarcoidosisUK is the #1 sarcoidosis patient representative in the UK. We engage with healthcare professionals and the healthcare system at a number of levels to improve the state of sarcoidosis care. This advocacy work raises the profile of the condition – policy and decision-makers are increasingly unable to ignore the fact that sarcoidosis deserves a much higher level of recognition and support.

Research

Sarcoidosis is a rare and often misunderstood disease that does not receive sufficient attention from pharmaceutical companies or medical researchers. Therefore research into sarcoidosis is limited. SarcoidosisUK are changing this. SarcoidosisUK may be small but we are a leading investor in sarcoidosis research. We work hard to raise sufficient money to fund sarcoidosis research projects and we will keep doing so until we have found a cure. Read more about our research here

Support

SarcoidosisUK knows that sarcoidosis patients often do not get the support they need or deserve. Our goal is to ensure that anyone affected by sarcoidosis is able to speak to someone who cares and understands them. The SarcoidosisUK Nurse Helpline was established in 2016 and has spoken to over 2600 callers; people affected by sarcoidosis in many different ways. Calls are made by nurses who have personal and/or professional experience of sarcoidosis. They are experts who provide an empathetic, listening ear. We also have SarcoidosisUK Support Groups across the UK, and SarcoidosisUK Facebook groups that are perfect for general discussion about any sarcoidosis-related topic. Find out more about our support options here.
