A life without security
Imagine if you had to leave your home overnight. What would you take with you?
Accessible, safe storage is hard to find for those experiencing homelessness in London, and it is so much more important than people realise. Street Storage provides free, accessible and secure storage for people experiencing homelessness. It is a simple yet brilliant solution to a problem that impacts a large (and growing) number of people.
Storing your belongings safely while you sleep out reduces the likelihood of theft, loss, damage, physical and mental strain, as well as allowing people on the street to access services, libraries, cafes and appointments ‘as a human being’. People are not instantly labelled ‘homeless’ because they have everything with them. It removes stigma and rebuilds their humanity.
An ever-present problem
The importance of storage has been overlooked in the homelessness sector. Every day people sleeping out are being identified by, and targeted for, having their belongings with them at all times. Every week, we at Street Storage hear horror stories of people’s belongings being vandalised, burnt, stolen, urinated on or lost. Street Storage started small because there was a need. As the need and demand for our service has increased, we have adapted and grown. We continue to adapt and grow to serve more and more of our community on the street.
