Since 2011 the School Club Zambia has delivered training and infrastructure support to schools that are seeking to raise the quality, relevance and creativity of education in rural Zambia. We have four impact areas of self-financing schools; vocational education, literacy development and girls education which underpins all of our work.

We are proud to be supported by a multi-skilled board of trustees in the UK. Our trustees bring a wealth of knowledge in international development, safeguarding, fundraising, finance and marketing.

We’re also proud of our Zambian board that consists of experts in NGO management, gender equality, business, marketing and education. Our Zambian NGO has an official Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education and a working partnership agreement with the Ministry of Health.

purpose

We build the confidence of rural youth by delivering new skills so that they can actively pursue opportunities in life. We work closely with schools and like-minded organisations to achieve this purpose.

values

We are youth centred and committed to the Rights of the Child as outlined in the UNCRC. We place particular value on article 12 of child participation.
We are transparent – ensuring our work and finances are honest and
clear to our beneficiaries and donors.
We are practical – using Specific Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound (SMART) interventions.

how do we do it?

Our programmes to date have included:

  1. Helping schools to start businesses that will provide long-term funding for their development needs.
  2. Establishing vocational training clubs.
  3. Training girls as peer educators.
  4. Delivering training in sexual reproductive health rights.
  5. Refresher training courses for teachers.
  6. Distributing literacy resources.
  7. Holiday camps in vocational training.
  8. Providing communities with clean water either through boreholes or rainwater harvesting.

“I used to be scared of my body but now I know what puberty is and that it is a normal part of life” – Girl Council Member, 2021.

how do we know it works?

We measure what matters:

  1. We track school income, expenses and profit AND what is achieved with this profit.
  2. We measure examination pass rates and literacy/numeracy levels.
  3. We collect data on teenage pregnancies and school drop out rates.
  4. We track the number of days that girls miss off school annually.
  5. We conduct household surveys every 3 years to measure food security and livelihood diversification.

Our team is trained in collecting stories regularly using the Most Significant Change methodology.

Data from our schools and partner clinics is gathered annually in partnership with the Minsitry of Education and Ministry of Health.

Focus group discussions and project planning meetings with young people in our communities lets us set our goals together.

why education?

More than 70% of the population in Zambia is under the age of 30 and according to UK Aid, 1000 Zambians join the job market every day.
UNICEF reported in 2019 that only 5% of 15 year-olds in the country met the minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics. Education has the power to unlock the potential of children and young people regardless of whether they end up in formal or self-employment opportunities.

what's next?

We are so proud of our successes and the impact that our projects are making in one of the most remote areas of Zambia. Our next 5 year strategic plan includes:

1. Building our own skill training centre that will focus on closing the gap between rural young people and essential services.

2. Continuing to use new methodologies like sport to make learning new skills fun and memorable!

3. Creating new opportunities for schools to raise their incomes and make the most of new commercial and trade opportunities.
