Wyoming is the last bastion of the West, where bold, independent and curious spirits are encouraged to forge their own way to adventure both big and small. The state can be divided into four different regions each leading to our national parks, Yellowstone and Grand Teton. The regions provide a unique road trip with hidden gems, state parks, western culture and more along the way.

Black to Yellow Region

This route explores the nation’s first national monument, Devils Tower, where you’ll wonder at the mystery of its existence in this sacred place. Bighorn National Forest, where you might cross paths native wildlife before ending up at the Big Horn Medicine Wheel. It’s the colorful and unique landscapes of bizarre rock formations, ridges and hollows of the Painted Desert locals call The Badlands. And it’s where you’ll step into the past at each town filled with history and lore, meeting larger-than-life characters like Buffalo Bill Cody and experiencing western culture.

Park to Park Region

Travel to Thermopolis, where the prehistoric past of the Wyoming Dinosaur Center leads to an alien landscape shaped by mineral water at Hot Springs State Park. Casper, where the Oregon Trail Ruts, Independence Rock and other fragments of the westward expansion lead to world-renowned fly fishing. Discover Fort Laramie National Historic Site that leads to state parks, like Guernsey and Glendo, filled with opportunities for boating and swimming. This region is home to Cheyenne, the capital of Wyoming and host of the world’s largest outdoor rodeo: Cheyenne Frontier Days. And it’s home to many small towns with western flair, makers of Wyoming spirits and the birthplace of the legendary jackalope.

Rockies to Tetons Region

Find solitude on a hike through pine and spruce trees in Medicine Bow National Forest. Push yourself by rock climbing sandstone, granite and limestone crags in Sinks Canyon, Vedauwoo or Grand Teton National Park. Find a rush swooshing down the secluded slopes of Snowy Range Ski Area or cruising down mountain bike tracks near the Wind River Range. Find rejuvenation soaking in Saratoga’s mineral hot springs or casting a line along the North Platte River, a world-renowned fishing destination. And find Western culture at the Wind River Indian Reservation’s ancient petroglyph sites.

Salt to Stone Region

Starting in southwest Wyoming, discover desert landscapes as you go off-roading in the Killpecker Sand Dunes or explore Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. Discover the past at Fossil Butte National Monument or experience what life was like for weary 19th-century travelers at Fort Bridger State Historic Site. Discover small towns and stunning views as you travel north through Star Valley, or head up past Pinedale, where the Green River flows into stunning alpine lakes with views of the Wind River Range’s Squaretop Mountain. Discover Bridger-Teton National Forest from new heights on the Jackson Hole Aerial Tram or a new perspective by learning about local wildlife at the National Elk Refuge.
