Tobago offers visitors a relaxing, authentic Caribbean experience that is unlike any other. From its pristine beaches to its well-defined, protected, unspoilt rainforest, this undiscovered tropical paradise will live long in the memory.

Tobago’s sustainable tourism intimately encompasses local communities and enabling them to enjoy a better quality of life, through increased socio-economic benefits and an improved environment. As a result of Tobago’s responsible and sustainable tourism ‘efforts in action’, guests are provided with a better holiday experience and local tourism operators are encouraged by increasingly beneficial business opportunities.

The island has outstanding natural biodiversity and an exquisite, unspoiled habitat that has proven a delight for eco-tourists the world over. The UNESCO-listed Main Ridge Forest Reserve, spanning nearly 4,000 hectares and rising to 572m, is the oldest protected forest in the western hemisphere, designated a Crown Reserve in 1776. Carefully designed, natural forest trails allow a unique small island experience, where visitors can explore the reserve’s habitats or enjoy a swim in a sparkling waterfall pool. With over one hundred species fluttering around the treetops, Gilpin Trace, and Miss Mills Trace are the best-known trails for spotting some of the 260 bird, reptile, mammal, insect and plant species found in Tobago. These trails lead you through areas known for sighting the Blue-backed Manakin, Streaked Flycatcher, the White-tailed Sabrewing and many more!

Protecting and sustainably enhancing this rich tapestry is at the heart of Tobago’s tourism strategy, which supports and helps guide the tourism industry to a holistic management approach:

  • North-East Tobago has been awarded the prestigious UNESCO Man and the Biosphere designation in 2020. The area is now the largest UNESCO site in the English-Speaking Caribbean.
  • The beaches of King’s Bay, Bloody Bay and Mt Irvine Bay received a formal endorsement to fully engage in meeting the Blue Flag criteria. This makes Tobago the only island in the Lesser Antilles with Blue Flag approval to the benefit of visitors and residents alike.
  • In 2020, the Tobago Tourism Agency Ltd. (TTAL) officially launched the Tobago Green Key programme in partnership with Green Trinidad & Tobago and is proud to celebrate the following Green Key awarded sites in Trinidad and Tobago:

Sustainable Accommodation in TObago

Bananaquit Vacations
Shepherd's Inn
Native Abode
Adventure EcoVillas
Tropical Apartments Tobago

The accommodation, activities, shops, cafés, restaurants, and parks as well as local tour operators, have all been an integral part of Tobago’s responsible tourism approach and are committed to sustainable development by making their businesses more responsible – environmentally, socially and culturally. And, by choosing to visit Tobago you will also have an important role to play – helping their activity to achieve financial sustainability.

That said, we think the more you get to know about Tobago, the more you will want to come back time and again. As you experience and understand the beauty of the Tobagonian people, the more you’ll be eager to learn and return.
