Inhamizua Centre

Casa Reom is located in the town of Inhamizua on the outskirts of Beira. Boys between the ages of 5 and 21 live at Casa Reom, where they are supported to complete their education and learn the skills to live independent lives when they leave.

As well as being cared for by the staff, the boys are given responsibilities, like learning to cook, taking turns to prepare meals and cleaning up in the kitchen. A small garden on the site is used to teach the boys how to grow food, complementing the food supply for the centre as well.

Re-Integration

Casa Reom have pioneered ways to help children re-integrate back into family life where there are existing families who can give them a stable home. Where no family exists, the boys are helped to begin independent lives when they become adults.

Pedro came to Casa Reom when he was 6 years old and graduated as a Police medic and is now working in the national police hospital in Maputo.

Monteiro’s family were refugees during the Mozambique war and was rescued from the streets of Beira and lived at Casa Reom after his parents died. Monteiro did well at school and graduated as a school teacher.

Staff

The Casa Reom centre is run by a team of 6 staff members, all of which are Mozambicans. The staff members provide parenting for the boys and look after all their day-to-day welfare and education and one member of staff is a trained youth counsellor.

Primary Education

Escola Reom is the primary school that is based at Casa Reom’s Inhamizua site. The school provides primary education, up to Year 6 (Grades 1 to 6), for around 600 children from the local community. The school has an excellent reputation in the local community and parents are invited to contribute in their children’s education.

Vocational Training

Casa Reom works in partnership with other local training providers. In addition to a focus on Education, all of the boys who live at Casa Reom are encouraged to choose vocational training courses to attend. Casa Reom is able to offer teaching in computer skills to all of the boys who live at the centre as well as provide these facilities to others in the community.

As an example, Jone loves to cook and after attending vocational training at a nearby centre, has begun a contract working in a local restaurant and now lives independently in his own apartment.

Helping the Community

After the devastation of Cyclone Idai in 2019, Casa Reom has stepped up its work in the local community. In addition to providing food and school uniforms, a programme of house building began for some of the poorest people around the city whose homes had been destroyed. The programme is funded by organisations and private donors and is managed by Casa Reom staff.
