Volunteers needed to assist with rescuing, rehabilitating, and providing a safe haven for wildlife at the Wildlife Rescue Coalition of Northeast Florida in Jacksonville, Florida, USA.

Their ultimate goal is to open an educational centre that will allow kids of all ages to come and learn about and appreciate wildlife. This centre would enable them to reach out and educate the Jacksonville community by participating with local schools and organisations.

The information that they could share through this facility would create awareness about the need to live in harmony with nature to children and adults who may not have had the opportunity to experience wildlife in their everyday lives. They hope that with the addition of an educational centre, they can inspire new people, like you, to become volunteers, members, rehabilitators, and sponsors of the organisation.

Some of the duties included in volunteering are as follows:

– Working at the Wildlife Centre in Jacksonville, caretakers are busiest in spring and summer when they receive thousands of orphaned animals as well as injured adults. Caretakers are responsible for feeding, cleaning, and general care of the wildlife such as food preparation, hand feeding, cleaning cages, maintaining a clean hospital environment, refreshing food and water in outdoor enclosures, and other duties as specified by staff supervisors. Animal experience not required, they provide on-the-job training on a daily basis. This is an immensely rewarding position – you can watch the babies go from infancy to release and know that you, personally, made it possible!

– As a special events volunteer, you will learn behind-the-scenes logistics of planning fundraising events, and work directly with the public. You may visit schools, events, and other organisations to teach ways to coexist with their wildlife neighbours and what to do when dealing with wild animals. It’s a fun opportunity, and you’re directly helping raise funds for WRCNEF, and awareness of its mission!

– WRCNEF receives calls 7 days a week, 24 hours a day concerning wild animals in need of help. Animal transportation volunteers would help respond to those calls by picking up contained animals and transporting them to the drop-off point or Wildlife Centre. These animals may be sick, injured, or displaced. This is a critical position; if you cannot get the animals, you cannot help them.

– Foster caretakers take small animals such as squirrels or opossums home to care for them when they are very young.

– They also have a programme for students in both college and high school who need to obtain hours. If you need service hours, please let them know during your interview. You must be at least 17 years old to volunteer.

– WRCNEF relies on donations of goods such as produce, feed, hay, and pet food. You would pick up the items from the vendors and transport them to the Wildlife Centre.

Save The River was formed in 1978 to protect and preserve the ecological integrity of the Upper St. Lawrence River through advocacy, education, and research.

Leading Advocate for the St. Lawrence River
Since 1978 Save The River has been the leading grassroots advocacy organization working to protect the St. Lawrence River.

As the region’s only environmental watchdog group, Save The River takes an active role in River policy issues. Over the years, Save The River has fought to stop winter navigation, expansion of the St. Lawrence Seaway infrastructure, pressed for better spill response planning and sought public accounting of shipping accidents, and campaigned for better water levels management.

In 2004, Save The River was designated the Upper St. Lawrence Riverkeeper and is a member of the international Waterkeeper Alliance.

Volunteers can get involved with shoreline cleanups, habitat restoration, aquarium & education, and event support.

Save The Bay is an independent, member-supported, non-profit organization. Established in 1970, when a small group of concerned citizens came together to fight an oil refinery proposed for the shores of Tiverton. Their work began a legacy as the eyes, ears and voice for Narragansett Bay. Today the organisation’s mission is carried out through three areas of work: advocacy, education, and habitat restoration and adaptation.

Every year, more than 4,000 volunteers play a vital role in every aspect of Save The Bay’s work—from supporting special events and tackling beach cleanups to assisting administrative housekeeping, habitat adaptation and more. Without volunteers, the organisation couldn’t accomplish all that they do to protect and improve Narragansett Bay. Whatever your interest, whatever your availability, chances are there’s a volunteer opportunity to fit your needs!

Hurtigruten guests can get involved with conservation and education programs whilst on board a Hurtigruten Expedition.

The Hurtigruten Expeditions Citizen Science Program has one goal: To increase your curiosity, knowledge and interest of the areas you are sailing to.

Hurtigruten’s expedition ships serve as the perfect platform for scientific research; With access to remote regions of the world and on-board experts, they can provide invaluable data to the scientific community – with the help of the onboard guests!

Guests are invited to participate in science activities, developing a greater understanding of the region in which they travel, becoming true ambassadors, and returning home to champion the protection of our planet’s most fragile ecosystems. Some of the projects run onboard many of the ships, which guests can get involved in, include:

1. Seabird Distribution with the Antarctic Site Inventory — Surveys throughout the Antarctic Peninsula help scientists understand how seabirds are using different habitats and provide valuable information about their life cycles.

2. Cloud Observations with the Globe Program — By observing and recording cloud cover timed to NASA satellite fly-overs, guests can help scientists understand how surface and air temperature are affected by cloud cover, and how clouds will respond to a changing climate.

3. Happywhale — We assist in tracking individual whales throughout our world’s oceans by harnessing the power of whale watching enthusiasts – our guests – expanding our scientific knowledge of their behavior and distribution.

4. Sea Leopard Project — A non-profit study aimed at a better understanding of the behaviour, ecology, and population dynamics of Leopard Seals on the Antarctic Peninsula to promote their conservation and safe human-seal interactions.

5. Fjord Phyto — Study phytoplankton to better understand how they respond to water temperature changes in the polar regions, providing a key to help mitigate future environmental impacts.

These programs are continuously running and Hurtigruten try to run at least 2 projects on each departure.

Volunteers can get involved with research, such as counting fish and taking samples, clean up, planting trees, and weeding invasive plant life.

Volunteer for beach clean ups in Chicago.

Keeping Chicago’s beaches clean starts with you! Adopt-a-Beach cleanups are a fun, free, easy way to give back to the community and keep plastic pollution out of the Great Lakes.

At Adopt-a-Beach cleanups, locally organized teams of volunteers, led by volunteer Team Leaders, clean local beaches and collect data on the litter they find. After the cleanups end, the Team Leaders enter litter data into our database, helping to form a picture of coastal litter across the entire Great Lakes region.

Despite “adopt” in the name, no long-term commitment is required.
