Our Travels

Fort Myers’ islands, beaches, and neighbourhoods are jam-packed with unmissable sights and attractions showcasing the area’s dynamic culture, natural beauty, cultural diversity, and so much more. To help you plan your next trip to Fort Myers we’ve compiled our top five list of attractions you can’t afford to miss on your next visit.

1. The Edison and Ford Winter Estates

First on the list are the landmark winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Thomas Edison purchased a property on this expansive estate first in 1886, followed by Henry Ford in 1915. Both used the homes for the duration of their lives for sunny winter escapes.

Today a visit to the estate will enable you to tour the main homes, guest houses, caretakers lodgings, pools and the pier that were used during their lifetimes. On site, you’ll also find the expansive 15,000sq ft Edison Ford Museum which features fascinating exhibitions and inventions, along with costumed actors. The wider grounds include 20 acres of botanical gardens with 1,700 plants.

2. The Florida Repertory Theatre

The Florida Repertory Theatre is housed in the Historic Arcade Theatre building which first opened in 1915, and served as a cinema and a Vaudeville house theatre. The original building was built as part of a regenerative 20th-century development in Downtown Fort Myers. The current Florida Repertory Theatre opened in the building in 1998.

As part of the reopening, the theatre has been restored and renovated and is used to host a variety of thrilling theatre productions in the main theatre room along with the smaller ArtStage Studio theatre, which opened more recently in 2009. This smaller space hosts 120 guests and is used for smaller productions and one-man plays.

Each year the theatre puts on performances for 10,000 guests and young people. Educational programs include art therapy for children with autism, programmes for advanced theatre students, along with introductory programmes to inspire interest in the arts.

Shows currently running in the Sep 2023 – May 2024 season include A Sherlock Carol, Beguiled Again, The Legend of Georgia McBride and many more.

3. Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve

The Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve is a 3,500-acre narrow wetland ecosystem which is home to a variety of local wildlife including alligators, birds, turtles, and otters. It is also used as a stopping point for species of migratory birds.

The preserve was founded after residents highlighted the need to step in and protect local ecosystems and elected to do this through increased taxes to fund the project. Following this, the boardwalk trail was opened in 1991 by the Lee County Parks and Recreation Department so the preserve could be enjoyed by visitors and locals alike.

The mile-long boardwalk trail includes observation decks, maps, and free information for those wishing to learn more about this incredible ecosystem. Guided tours led by experts can also be booked. Visitors can also explore the onsite interpretive centre, and paid parking is also available.

4. IMAG History and Science Center

The IMAG History and Science Center is a family friendly museum which focuses primarily on STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) along with the local history and culture of Southwest Florida.  The centre has a variety of incredible exhibits and displays including an aquarium, along with activities for all ages.

The centre also includes an onsite restaurant, the Snack House Café, along with the vibrant Snack House Exhibit. This exhibit includes a range of 1950s memorabilia and displays from the original Snack House Café which was open from 1949 – 1993 in Fort Myers. When it first opened. the Snack House Café was the first restaurant in Fort Myers with air conditioning, and it quickly became a local landmark in the area. The original 1950s sign has been refurbished by IMAG and can be seen on your visit.

5. J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge

The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island is famous around the world as a stopping point for migratory birds. This 7,600-acre wildlife refuge was created in 1945 by Harry Truman via an executive order to protect local wildlife and was later renamed after the conservationist Jay Norwood Darling in 1967. It is especially known for its diversity of birds, with over 245 different species.

A free centre is open every day which includes programs and tours. A 4-mile scenic drive can also be taken, and you can spend anywhere from a couple of hours to half a day on your visit. Available activities include fishing, cycling, bird watching, fishing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. Dogs are allowed on leads.

There is plenty to do in fantastic Fort Myers all year round with activities to suit all age ranges and tastes. Everywhere I go, people are talking about Slovenia. I’ve just spent a week with a group of travel agents from all over Europe and they are buzzing about it, too! One of the big attractions of this lesser-known destination is that it is relatively unspoilt by mass tourism. This might be about to change. So, now is the time to book your 2024 holiday in Slovenia, before the crowds get there.

Slovenia borders Austria and Croatia, both hugely popular destinations. It has all its neighbours have to offer, such as stunning mountains and lakes, alpine forest, a beautiful stretch of the Adriatic coast, rivers, caves, medieval towns, castles, and churches. It is a paradise for hikers, and I am told the scenery is just stunning. It also has skiing and lots of water sports on the rivers, such as rafting and canoeing. There are great opportunities for active family holidays.

It is possible to do a multi-centre fly drive holiday or just concentrate on a couple of areas. The main city of Ljubljana is where most people fly into, and it is a very picturesque city overlooked by its castle. It has interesting architecture, ranging from Art Nouveau to the socialist era. Slovenia’s cities are quite small and easy to get around. The coastal cities of Piran and Koper owe much to their Venetian past. I’m reliably informed that the cake is excellent, for example!

One of the most famous places to visit is Lake Bled, a town full of cafes and restaurants that grew around the lake, and which draws tourists for the breathtaking views. The lake is small enough to walk around, too. A must-see.

For the luxury traveller, there are a number of five-star hotels, such as the Kempinski Palace Portoroz, Vila Planinka, Hotel Grad Otocec- Relais Chateaux, Hotel Bohinj, Vanderbilt Urbani Resort. At the moment, with many people shuddering at the cost of hotels in Europe, you would be very pleasantly surprised by the value of top hotels in Slovenia. This probably won’t last indefinitely, as the destination gets more popular.

I should also mention that Slovenia combines very well with Austria and Croatia for a two or even three centre holiday.

I have found two amazing holidays that I think would suit my luxury clients:

A tailor-made cultural landscape adventure, taking in Ljubljana, Piran, Lipica, Bled, and Lake Bohinj. From price (depending on your hotel choices) £2,615pp including return flights, hotels and a private English-speaking driver/guide.

Or for a trip of a lifetime, how about a 12 day tour aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express train, taking in eight Balkan countries, travelling from Venice to Trieste, Ljubljana, Sarajevo and Mostar, Dubrovnik, Belgrade, Skopje, Thessaloniki, Sofia, Plovdiv and ending up at the Four Seasons in Istanbul. Price from £12,685pp

From his favourite places to new initiatives, Charitable Traveller speaks to Zoëtry Marigot Bay's director of sales, Alisteer Nelson, about what makes the hotel so special.

What attracted you to joining Zoëtry Marigot Bay?

I’ve been with this gem of a property for two teats and was grasped by its uniqueness. Being situated on a marina yet tucked away in the hills really makes Zoëtry Marigot Bay stand out. The lushness, wooden architecture, flora, and fauna all stimulate a sense of Zen and make it a sought-after fairy tale.

History and heritage is a big part of Zoëtry Marigot Bay – what does that mean for you personally?

As a Jamaican moving to St. Lucia, I have personally experienced the island’s rich history and culture, which is deeply rooted in the resort through its bespoke experiences. For example, the Cooking Class is one that awakens your taste buds to the flavours of the island’s local dishes. Or learn about the nostalgic stories of our founding father’s journey, Walter Boudreau – the mast of his boat is at the entrance of our fine dining restaurant 1461.

How does that history and heritage impact the guests?

Each guest travels to feel a sense of purpose and to understand the heritage and culture of the destination. Bringing the experiences of the past to the present leaves a mark on our clients as they relive days gone by – imagine, for example, indulging in an Indigenous Spa Treatment in a spa cabin that resembles an abode of our ancestors; this experience will forever be etched in the minds of our guests.

Zoëtry is committed to preserving the environment – can you give some examples of what that looks like for your guests?

A palatable adventure greets all our guests here at the resort. Our executive chef (a native of France) uses the freshest farm produce and practises the farm-to-table concept, starting with the organic herb garden on-site. Irrigation is carefully managed through recycling and contributes significantly to the hotel’s ecological tapestry, which guests can enjoy on daily botanical walks.

What plans and developments are on the horizon for Zoëtry?

Nestled in nature on a marina, Zoëtry Marigot Bay is rich in culture and has diverse offerings to make it unique and etch it in the memories of our guests. Through our relaxation journey, each guest returns home with a balanced state of being, and the resort is currently focusing on its in-suite chef’s table dining
experiences and locale beach experience, which involve a beach concierge service, dedicated beach relaxation services, and a mix and mingle atmosphere at DoLittles restaurant and bar, named after the 1967 Doctor Dolittle film shot in the bay. Plus, the resort continues to develop its curated offerings, and spa and nature lovers can look forward to two new experiences opening this autumn featuring the Sulphur Springs in Soufrière.

Lastly, where's your favourite part of the hotel, and why?

The Hurricane Hole is my happy place. Down on the water’s edge, the bar offers the most relaxing atmosphere as you dine with a view of the tranquil Caribbean waters.

What is your idea of a great Christmas holiday? If you are tired of spending Christmas at home, just want a break for a change or to get away from the commercialism of Christmas, there are plenty of options, subject to availability.

Maybe you would like to travel to Lapland with the family, pre-Christmas and see Father Christmas in his own home? I can vouch for this experience. I took my children when they were quite young, and I think they actually believed they had seen the real thing for at least ten years afterwards. I have to say the Father Christmas we saw was very convincing! Be careful who you choose for this experience. You want it to be magical. I can guide you.

Speaking of magical, what could be more so than seeing the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Disneyland Florida, complete with fake snow? Ask me about the best luxury hotels and villas to stay in. Disney at Christmas is so exciting!

Maybe you fancy staying in an ice hotel or an Arctic spa retreat? With the snow all around you, you stay all snug under your eiderdown and watch the magical display of stars in the night sky. I recommend the Arctic Retreat and the Arctic Bath. Superb luxury properties you will be amazed by.

If all this talk of snow is making you shiver, perhaps a week or so in the sunshine might be for you. The Caribbean will already be heavily booked up, but ask me if you fancy a luxury break there, or maybe the Maldives, Mauritius, or the Middle East?

One of my very favourite hotels in the Maldives has had a face-lift and is about to re-open. Huvafen Fushi was already fabulous when I stayed there, but all 44 bungalows will be fully refurbished in a new modern style using local materials where possible. The villas are very spacious, with wonderful outdoor bathrooms. Huvafen Fushi is also building two new two-bedroom Ocean Pavillions with uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean. The hotel is due to reopen on 01 October and I have a special offer including 35% off accommodation!

So, however you wish to spend your luxury Christmas holidays, do get in touch and ask me for recommendations.

Reading and Leeds Festival is happening this weekend, and as the last of the British summer music festivals kicks off, we’re starting to plan our festival travel for 2024.

Music festivals are a vibrant and exhilarating celebration of art, culture, and the universal language of music. From the pulsating beats of electronic dance music to the soulful melodies of rock and indie, these events bring people from all corners of the world together for a shared experience like no other. Here’s a rundown of five of the most captivating music festivals that have graced the global stage:

1. Coachella (California, USA)

Coachella is a two-week testament to creativity and diversity, showcases a wide range of musical genres, world class acts, awe-inspiring art installations, and iconic fashion inspiration. Held in the Coachella Valley in California every April, this iconic festival has become a cultural phenomenon that attracts music enthusiasts, influencers, celebrities, and art aficionados alike.

2. Glastonbury (Somerset, UK)

Iconic Glasto is more than just a music festival; it’s a kaleidoscope of contemporary performing arts, transformative experiences, and world-class acts. The festival takes place in June and is a pilgrimage for music lovers. Every year a portion of ticket sales to Glastonbury is donated to various charities including Oxfam, Greenpeace, WaterAid and hundreds of other worthy causes (£2m given annually in recent years), and to improving the festivals infrastructure and environmental impact.
Registration for 2024 is now open!

3. Tomorrowland (Boom, Belgium)
Prepare to be transported to a realm of enchantment at Tomorrowland. Known for its immersive stage designs and electrifying EDM lineup, this July event in Belgium is a fantasyland where music and magic intertwine. Tomorrowland takes place in the town of Boom, situated in the picturesque De Schorre recreation area, just outside of Brussels. The festival grounds are transformed into a whimsical wonderland, with each stage offering a different thematic experience. From enchanting forests to futuristic landscapes, the stages are designed to transport attendees to another world. An absolute must-visit for any EDM fan.
4. Lollapalooza (Various Locations)

Lollapalooza has evolved from a Chicago-based festival to an international phenomenon with editions in multiple cities worldwide. This festival offers a diverse array of musical genres, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

In January 2024 Lollapalooza will be taking place at the Mahalakshmi Racecourse in Mumbai, tickets are on sale now.

5. Burning Man (Nevada, USA)

Burning Man is more than just a music festival; it’s a unique and vibrant experiment in community, self-expression, art, and radical self-reliance. The event’s main principles are guided by the Ten Principles, which include concepts like radical inclusion, communal effort, gifting, and leaving no trace.

At Burning Man, participants come together to create a temporary city known as Black Rock City. This city is built from scratch in the desert and is designed to be a self-sustaining and self-reliant community. The event typically spans a week and culminates with the symbolic burning of a large wooden effigy, known as “The Man,” hence the name “Burning Man.”

The end of the summer school holidays is soon upon us, and you may already be thinking about Christmas and beyond. If you are planning a ski holiday, the best time to book this is now, for two main reasons:

Availability: If you are skiing in Europe, you will be relying on low-cost airlines and these seats sell out fast. If you are a large family or group of family or friends, all the more reason to secure those airlines seats now. Of course, I am bound to remind you that booking a package holiday is the safest bet, as airlines tend to cancel or change their flight schedules and you don’t want to be left with a very expensive hotel or chalet booking and no way of getting there!

Cost: I’m sure I don’t need to remind you that the best prices are to be had by booking in advance. Fares go up these days, not down and those last-minute bargains are probably a thing of the past.

For luxury bookings, the obvious European ski resorts are Val d’Isere, Courchevel, Verbier, Val Thorens, Megeve, but there are other little gems that are lesser known, so please ask me. These days, luxury hotels you will have heard of, such as Six Senses, W, Four Seasons, the Chedi and Relais & Chateaux have all moved into the ski resorts but there are also new names, such as the K2 Chogori just outside Val D’Isere and Shemshak Lodge, Courchevel. Wonderful spas and Michelin-star restaurants are all on offer these days. Even non-skiers will have a fantastic experience at any of these hotels.

In addition, there are the traditional luxury hotels which have been catering for discerning skiers for decades. Some you will have heard of or stayed in, but some may be waiting for you to discover. Ski apartments have also come a long way, and these are often a good choice for families. Many now have swimming pools, some indoor and outdoor and some apartments have private Jacuzzis, games rooms and cinema rooms. Then there are the catered chalets, may with baby and childcare facilities.

Further afield and if you have the time, the USA and Canada offer wide, open pistes and a high standard of accommodation. You’ve probably heard of Aspen and Utah, but again, there are lesser-known resorts and experiences, from staying in a cowboy town to the chocolate box inns of New England. I particularly like Stowe, Vermont. Magical at night with all the twinkling fairy lights. Facilities for the children are excellent in North America and ski schools tend to be really fun.

I’d like to give a special mention to the new Hotel Montafon in Austria which is quite unlike anything I have come across and really exceptional! It has incredible facilities for the kids, including a bouncy castle and slide to the lower level as you enter the lobby! In addition, this is a super eco-hotel, so I particularly like that! Here are some hotel facts:

-It’s the only 5* Leading Hotel of the World family hotel in German-speaking countries

-Children are already included in the room rate

-It is a climate-neutral hotel running sustainably in line with net zero

-There is a half-board plus option with innovative “Via Alpina” cuisine

-It features exciting architecture by star architects Snohetta Studio Innsbruck and Vudafieri Saverino Partners Milan

-It’s located 1,000m above sea level on the Erlebnisberg Golm

-Family rooms are designed with plenty of space from 43 sq.m upwards

-The hotel includes age-appropriate play areas including a Science Lab & Camp Room

-The hotel features a family Ecotainment concept based on “Ranger Programmes”

-Acquapura Organic SPA with separate Adults-Only SPA

Get in touch today to book your stay at this phenomenal hotel.

Prices start from £5,585 for a family of 4 including;

-Breakfast, Dinner & “Jause” (late lunch)

-EasyJet to Innsbruck flights including bags and seats

-Private return transfers

-And of course 7 nights of luxurious accommodation from the 13-20th of December 2023.

So, the school summer holidays have begun and the weather has taken a turn for the worse. I hope August improves for those of you who are staying in the UK this summer.

Whether you are staying put or not, you may be thinking about an October half term holiday with the family. Now is definitely the time to be booking this, as well as thinking about Christmas and ski holidays. Yes, I’m afraid so!

Let’s start with October. You probably don’t immediately think about the Caribbean for October, but there are lots of islands that avoid possible hurricanes, so I wouldn’t rule them out. Prices are good in October and you’ll more than likely have plenty of sunshine.

Where else could you go? Dubai and all the other emirates, such as Ras al Khaimah, Ajman, Fujairah, as well as Oman and Abu Dhabi. All great choices for families, with every sort of entertainment on offer. I know some people don’t like the idea of Dubai, but don’t knock it till you try it. There’s a reason why the bubble has not burst. However, if you’re looking for something a little less full-on, ask me about quieter options in the Middle East.

Cyrus is a great option for October half term as the temperatures are usually still in the high 20s. I recommend the following hotels for families:

Cap St Georges- a newish hotel with an amazing kids club and a gaming room for older children!

Park Lane – the supervised Park Kidz has a vast themed castle, playground, and a pool complete with a pirate’s ship and waterslide, as well as a mini club and crèche. Babysitting is available too.

Almyra and the Annabelle – both have great facilities for families. Almyra takes babies from 4 months in its kid’s club and provides everything you need for little ones, so you don’t have to cart everything with you on the plane!

In Portugal, the Villa Vita Park and the Martinhal are great for families.

Here is just a small selection of half-term luxury offers. Please ask me if you don’t see the destination or hotel you had in mind:

Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa
7 nights from £12,869 per family
Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi
5 nights from £7,569 per family
Heritage Awali Golf & Spa Resort Mauritius
7 nights from £10,545 per family
Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort, Paphos, Cyprus
7 nights from £6,645 per family
The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama
7 nights from £4,725 per family

Many people I know decided to spend their early summer holidays in Greece, Spain, and Italy. Sounds like they all had a lovely time. The weather was great and those who had booked early enough might have avoided the extortionate holiday prices I am seeing for Europe as the summer goes on. This was due, in part, to the high demand from clients who had opted for a short-haul holiday, thinking it would be way cheaper than going further afield. They might have got a better deal going long haul, as it turns out. Availability was a huge problem, and this was exacerbated by the high number of Americans travelling to Europe, with the exchange rate very much in their favour. As I write, the school holidays are almost upon us and the temperatures in Europe are exceptionally high. You’ll need plenty of sunscreen and access to water, where possible! If this trend continues, you might want to consider places like the Caribbean and Mauritius next summer, where temperatures stay around 30 degrees.

For those of us who chose to enjoy the British summer, it has been glorious. Endless summer days (except for the first week of Wimbledon, naturally!) and plenty going on everywhere, from outdoor theatre and concerts to summer fetes.

Thoughts now turn to Autumn travels, and I thought I’d offer a word of warning. It used to be that the prices fell dramatically from mid-September, but I fear this will not necessarily be the case this year. Those who did not travel over the summer period will have booked in advance to travel to Europe and I know that hotels are reporting high occupancy levels right until the latter part of the year. I have the solution: instead of opting for the most popular places, such as Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Dubrovnik, try one of the lesser visited cities, all of which have so much to offer.

For example, Krakow in Poland is a medieval city with a magnificent town square, art galleries and museums and a wonderful jazz scene. Maybe San Sebastian in Spain, which has more Michelin-star restaurants than any other city in the world and a very fine beach, too. Basel in Switzerland has picture box houses and is famous for its art galleries. Tallinn in Estonia is a wonderful medieval city with great restaurants and cafes. I keep hearing people raving about Oporto in Portugal, famous for its port wine, yes, but also for its cobbled streets, baroque churches, and hand-painted tiles. In France, let us not forget that there are so many beautiful cities, such as Strasburg, with its canals and timber-framed houses, Aix en Provence, which has all the chic of Paris, wide open boulevards, and a chance to see Paul Cezanne’s art studio. Both these French cities are reachable by Eurostar.

Have I got your attention? I could go on for hours and am sorry I cannot write about more of the fabulous places there are to visit in Europe alone! So many deserve a mention, and I can offer splendid, luxury accommodation in all these locations. So, if you fancy a change from your usual city break to Paris (sorry, Paris, I do love you!!), then please get in touch and I will find you your perfect luxury Autumn break.

I have a lovely special offer at the wonderful Meneghetti Wine Hotel in Croatia, which I featured in an earlier blog:
Valid for September and October, book a minimum of 4 nights and get one free, ie. Stay 4, pay 3. Includes breakfast!

I have just returned from a trip to St. Pete/ Clearwater, a beach playground on the west coast of Florida. The easiest way to reach it is with a direct British Airways flight to Tampa airport, which is, in itself, quite an amazing place! In the centre of the terminal is a giant pink flamingo and, on the day, we arrived, a black bear was wandering the perimeter, apparently. He didn’t enter the terminal for a Starbucks though but was safely coaxed back to where he came from. I was sorry not to see him.

This area of Florida is quite different from the razzmatazz of Disney, although it combines perfectly with the parks. This is all about beautiful white Sandy beaches, nature, and culture. From the Dali Museum to the James Museum which is full of Native American art, countless art galleries, and a sea life rescue centre, there is so much to do, and if you miss the entertainment parks, Busch Gardens is not far away.

Here there is water, water everywhere and life revolves around the sea, the estuaries, the lakes, and the swamps. Water sports are big here. A first for me, I saw motorised “cars” which you can hire to jet around on the water. A hilarious sight!

There are miles and miles of park trails to walk and cycle and the scenery is stunning. Watch out for alligators though! Seriously, if you keep to the paths, you’ll be fine. But don’t let your little doggie off the lead.

Shopping is great, with lots of small, quaint towns with boutique gift shops. There’s even a little Greece town, with authentic Greek food. This is a wonderful place to take kids for a family holiday as everything is geared up for this. Hotel rooms nearly all have kitchenette areas and some even have washers and dryers.

But what about luxury hotels? Most hotels are 4* and very good, but there are a few fabulous luxury properties, too. The one that stood out for me was the Vinoy Hotel, a refurbished period hotel. This is class. The lobby area and ballroom (currently being converted into a fine dining restaurant) have been lovingly restored to their former glory and are super elegant. The rooms in the old part of the hotel are a marvellous fusion of old and modern. The newer section has retained the old style and is spacious and very tastefully decorated. The pool area and casual dining restaurant are gorgeous.

Also, just newly opened is the JW Marriott Clearwater Beach, a very modern hotel with spacious apartment units, an incredible kids club, a great pool and gym and a superb restaurant with open sides allowing the sea breeze to flow through.

One last thing I should mention is that the cuisine in the US has been revolutionised! No longer just fast food and barbecued wings, Americans are now as passionate about food as we are and they have the natural raw ingredients, such as giant shrimp, crab, and other local fish to produce mouthwatering dishes to die for.

So, all in all, a great place to visit. If you’d like to know more, please contact me.
