Ireland – Food Cloud Gleaning Project

Volunteers can help lessen food waste with the Food Cloud Gleaning Project

Food Cloud is a social enterprise that seeks to tackle food waste around Ireland, by connecting businesses that have surplus food with Charities and Community Groups that need it.

Globally, 33% of food is wasted, causing four times more carbon emissions than global aviation. At the same time, an estimated 821 million people do not have enough to eat. Food Cloud have redistributed over 140 Million meals in Ireland and internationally since 2013. By rescuing more than 58,900 tonnes of food from going to waste, over 188,000 tonnes of CO2 -equivalent has been avoided.

Volunteer with Food Cloud by joining the Gleaning Project.
Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers’ fields after they have been commercially harvested or on fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest.
Food Cloud have been rescuing food from Irish fields through the gleaning project since 2017 and since then they’ve worked with groups of volunteers to collect a range of high-quality crops (by hand) such as potatoes, onions, carrots and broccoli from our partners at Meade Potato Company and Ballymakenny Farm. Most of the fresh produce saved through Gleaning is redistributed to our network of charity and community group partners.
