Hidayah was founded in 2017 in the United Kingdom and in 2020, branched out to the United States. Hidayah means guidance in Arabic and we are entirely volunteer-led. Hidayah is a secular organisation; however, its projects and activities are developed specifically for the needs of LGBTQI+ Muslims.
Our vision is to ensure our voices are heard and understood. Our mission is to provide support and welfare for LGBTQI+ Muslims and promote social justice and education about our community to counter discrimination, prejudice and injustice. We are a mix of practising and non-practising Muslims. As an inclusive organisation, we do not exclude anyone, and warmly welcome friends, families, and allies to all of our events.
Below are the core values of Hidayah – these form the basis of everything we do and how we grow and connect with our community, both in the United Kingdom and in the United States.
Care: Caring for our community is the core of everything we do at Hidayah. With half of the LGBTQI+ community facing anxiety and depression, the need for care and belonging is one of our main priorities as an organisation. We aim to continue developing the services and support we provide to LGBTQI+ Muslims.
Connect: Connecting with our community is vital to the work we do at Hidayah. We centre our community by providing services catered to their needs. At Hidayah, we believe that working collaboratively with allies helps improve visibility for LGBTQI+ Muslims. We have volunteers from different backgrounds and communities, providing unique insights into their experiences of being LGBTQI+ and Muslim, which helps us to shape the services we offer. We aim to continue developing a robust network within the wider LGBTQI+ community as well as improving our own resources on our website.
Growth: Growing as an organisation means reaching more people who need our help and raising our profile as a community within the wider LGBTQI+ community. We will continue to do this by raising awareness of the issues LGBTQI+ Muslims face, by attending conferences, making social media posts and reaching out to educational institutions.
