Lizzi’s Luxury Edit: Solo Travel

There seems to be an exponential rise in demand for singles holidays, or solo travel as it’s more often referred to now. We are not necessarily talking about hedonistic holidays for the young and beautiful, thumping club music by the pool or unofficial dating opportunities! No, we are talking about people of all ages choosing to travel alone. Why? There may be many explanations for this current trend. With our frenetic pace of life, some people just want to escape and be by themselves. All by themselves, with the chance to breathe in fresh air, take stock, reflect, make plans, shut out the world, forget their problems for a while.

As travellers, many people have become braver, particularly women travelling alone. It is easier to fly alone, check into a hotel alone and dine alone without having to face raised eyebrows. This was always off putting and uncomfortable for women and I, for one, am happy to report that I feel safer and confident travelling alone on business and no longer in fear of attracting unwanted attention.

Some people dream of taking on a big adventure all by themselves. Maybe trekking in Machu Pichu or climbing a mountain in Africa. Now we are constantly on our phones and computers, what a treat to be able to completely alone with our thoughts and able to admire wonderful scenery without having to make idle chat. By contrast,  if we choose, we never actually have to be able alone. We have the option of taking selfies and chatting to our family and friends from the remotest of places! An adventure like this can be done solo or in a group. Even with group tours, you often have the option of dipping in and out of the daily activities. If you want to take the morning off, you  can lie by the pool or sit in a café. There is so much more flexibility these days.

Other solo travellers might opt for a spa holiday or a beach holiday where there is no schedule, nowhere you have to be and no timetable to adhere to. How refreshing! How incredible would it be to sit around the pool and read a book, completely undisturbed? Then, come the evening, you might want to join other singles in the bar or restaurant. Or not, as the case may be.

If you have a particular interest, such as cooking, a sport, history or music, you can join like-minded travellers on a themed holiday. I know people who have made lifelong friends on such trips, as you already share a common interest. And yes, if you want to, you may just find love.

Cruising is another option and single women need not fear they are going to be approached by a gentleman offering to be their dance partner for the duration of the cruise! Unless you require this service, of course!

Many single holidays carry a single supplement, this is true. If a hotel has two paying guests in a room, of course, they make more money than selling that room to a single traveller. But many companies now negotiate special rates for single travellers or even advertise that they carry no single supplements. If you are travelling independently, try going off-season when the hotels are glad of your business and may be persuaded to give you a very good room rate.

Where can you travel to on your own? Just about anywhere, these days! Here are a few examples:
