Welcome to the Stroke Association

The Stroke Association is the UK’s national stroke charity dedicated to improving and rebuilding the lives of stroke survivors and their families.

Our key areas of work include practical and emotional support services, advice and information, life-saving research, building and connecting stroke communities, fundraising, campaigning, and volunteering.

We need your support to keep this vital work going.

What is a Stroke?

A stroke is a brain attack, it’s sudden and devastating. Life changes instantly and recovery is tough. There are over 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK.

A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off, killing brain cells. Damage to the brain can affect how the body works. It can affect your speech, mobility, emotions and personality. The effects of a stroke depend on where it takes place in the brain, and how big the damaged area is.

  • Two-thirds of people who survive a stroke find themselves living with a disability.
  • 40% of stroke survivors experience anxiety and depression.
  • 37% of working-age stroke survivors give up work following their stroke.
  • 6 in 10 stroke survivors rely on the help of a carer, often a family member or friend.

The FAST test helps spot the three most common symptoms of stroke. But there are other signs, visit stroke.org.uk/symptoms to find out more.

Why is the Stroke Association so Important?

There are more than 100,000 strokes in the UK every year. That is around 1 stroke every 5 minutes. 1 in 6 men and 1 in 5 women will have a stroke in their lifetime in the UK. More than 400 children have a stroke in the UK every year. There are 22.4 million people affected by or connected to a stroke.

A stroke can happen to anyone, at any age. Each stroke is different and the care each stroke survivor needs can vary.

We understand how scary and life-altering a stroke can be. We offer different types of support; practical guidance over the phone, trusted stroke-specific information, a friendly face or a vibrant online community.

But there is hope, thanks to the unique support we provide but we need your help.

Together, we can make sure that all stroke survivors lead the best life possible after a stroke.
