We support the humanitarian education programmes of the Sisters of Mary which has established schools – the majority of which are live-in schools – for the most vulnerable children, worldwide. The programmes operate in the most deprived communities of The Philippines, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Brazil, and Tanzania.

The programmes provide children with access to food, healthcare, and shelter as well as quality accredited academic and vocational education and training tailored to the skill needs of the local economy. With the chance of an education, these children can realise their full potential, secure employment and transform their lives, helping to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. The programmes also provide safety and care for children whose early lives are marked by neglect.

Delivering Quality Education and Care

The Sisters have been operating programmes for disadvantaged children for more than fifty years. Their programmes are designed as low cost and sustainable. It costs just £1,000 to fund a place for one child per year and ensure they receive safe shelter, social and medical care, and educational support so they can reach their full potential at school.

World Villages for Children works towards nine of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with particular emphasis on: 1. No poverty and 4. Quality Education.  The programmes focus on ending child poverty, improving health, quality academic and vocational education and progress into employment.

Transforming Communities

The heart of our programmes is our children. So far, over 167,000 children have graduated from the programmes but the impact on poverty relief is many times this figure and the work leads to systemic change in deprivation levels. We call this the multiplier effect.  When one child has an education and skills that enable them to get a good job with higher earning potential, they go on to support their own families,

Together, when we educate one child, the impact on poverty relief touches whole families and our work reaches far beyond each of the 20,000 children in our schools each year. Whole communities can be lifted out of suffering and despair when we give their children and families hope for a long lasting and brighter future though education.
