This week I had an enquiry from a client who has previously been quite adventurous. They have been on a few multi-centre touring holidays in the past, always done in style!  However, they had not travelled since before Covid and were now ready to take the plunge. They asked me for ideas about where they could go to be wowed and rekindle their love of travel.

I have suggested a trip to South Africa, combined with the Seychelles. The idea would be to fly to Cape Town, have a few days there exploring the town including the famous Table Mountain, and Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. From Cape Town, there are many day excursions, such as to the Cape of Good Hope to see the Penguins. I, personally, tend not to recommend the day trips to the Winelands or the one-day safaris. I think these require more time to experience properly. Hotel-wise, I would suggest Cape Grace, with easy access to the waterfront, Belmond Mount Nelson, built-in 1899, or the One and Only for families.

After exploring Cape Town, the clients could venture north the Stellenbosch to visit the Winelands and then fly to Port Elizabeth to take in a short safari. I recommend the less crowded Pumba Game Reserve and staying at the Pumba Water Lodge. If you have children, though, Shamwari is excellent as it is a non-malaria area.

On to the Seychelles and some well-earned R&R. I can reel off a list of wonderful hotels, such as Six Senses, North Island, Fregate Island, Denis Private Island, Four Seasons and Labriz…. but I would want to discuss these to match the right hotel to the client.

Either way, the above itinerary would be guaranteed to impress!

Unique social enterprise travel agency is urging holidaymakers to be vigilant when making bookings, to ensure they don’t fall victim to ongoing holiday scams and to guarantee professional help if plans go astray.

Following a surge in holiday bookings due to the lifting of various Covid restrictions, Charitable Travel is encouraging consumers to book with trusted travel businesses after it has been revealed an average of £1,168* is lost by those affected by holiday fraud, and thousands of holidaymakers suffer in long queues and experience flight cancellations.

Charitable Travel is revealing a number of ways holidaymakers fall victim to fraud, including bookings made through fake websites which appear genuine, false advertisements placed on social media and legitimate websites, and misleading communication through WhatsApp, social media and email.

Melissa Tilling, CEO at Charitable Travel said: “Booking through a reputable business is always the safest way to avoid fraudulent bookings and to ensure you get the best offers possible for your holiday. Holiday scammers are using new tactics which are harder than ever to detect, with some victims not even realising they’ve been scammed until the day of their holiday.

“To ensure your holiday is in the safest hands, it’s always best to visit a trusted travel business like Charitable Travel, which not only provides holiday protection and expert advice, but also delivers the best deals, saving both time and money.”

In addition to fraudulent bookings, consumers in recent weeks have faced holiday uncertainty with disheartening airport staff shortages, flight cancellations and long queues, often leading holidaymakers unsure of where to turn to.

Melissa said:  “After a long period of travel uncertainty, it’s no surprise that the public are ready and raring to get back on a plane to their favourite destinations.

“The vast majority of holidaymakers enjoy their trips without a hitch, but for those worried about either scams circulating or disruptions at airports, we encourage them to book through a trusted local travel business which can provide the latest advice and will be on hand to assist if any issues arise.”

Grenada is one of my favourite Caribbean islands and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I have visited all the best hotels and I DO have a favourite. You’ll have to ask!

I visited Grenada in May and being in the Caribbean again after Covid was a real tonic. There were lots of smiles and gasps as I and the other travel professionals in the group experienced the feeling of walking on sand and swimming and snorkelling in the Ocean after a two-year hiatus. We appreciated the sunsets, the food, the reggae music, and the warmth of the sun with new eyes, as if we were being reborn. It is so easy to take things for granted until they are gone and being on holiday is one of the things most people say they missed the most during the pandemic.

Currently, Grenada does not have a direct flight, so you fly from Gatwick to St Lucia or Barbados (about an 8-and-a-half-hour flight), and then you take a short 30-minute connection to Grenada. However, do not let this put you off! Firstly, every hotel is within a 15-minute transfer from the airport, so you are in your hotel room quicker than you might have been in St Lucia or Barbados! Grenada is pushing airlines for a direct flight, and we hope this might happen later this year.

The island is lush, with flowers and greenery everywhere. The interior is forest, waterfalls, and the occasional tranquil lake. Grenada is famous for its exceptional bird life, attracting bird watchers from around the world. Grand Etang National Park is one of the best known of Grenada’s national parks and features numerous walking trails, lush vegetation, and the famous Mona monkey!

Grenada has recently launched a voluntourism program, whereby visitors can contribute to the sustainable development of the destination and get involved in local conservation efforts. We planted a tree, for example.

Getting around is easy and people drive slowly. There are rum distilleries and chocolate factories to visit all over the island. Grenada is known as The Spice Island and the food is amazing, due to the abundance of fresh vegetables, fruit, and fish expertly flavoured with local spices.

For the more adventurous, there are boat trips to the outlying islands, swimming in the pools of tranquil waterfalls, river tubing, hiking, and snorkelling to enjoy. Grenada has an incredible underwater sculpture park, where you can snorkel or dive down to view the sculptures. Or you could just laze around on the beautiful white sand beaches!

There is a hotel to suit every budget including couples, families, multi-generational parties and more.  Although I would say it does not have the overt glitz and glamour of the likes of Barbados, there are world-class hotels, very much 5* plus, but the atmosphere is more laid back and arguably more authentically Caribbean.

Hotel wise, there is a great choice. Silversands is new and modern and boasts a huge swimming pool, twice the length of an Olympic pool! The rooms are enormous and high tech, and the resort also has a fabulous spa. Spice Island is an old favourite and its Sea Grape suites, right on the beach, are eternally popular.

Calabash oozes class and sophistication, with a guaranteed warm welcome from the owners. The suites are bright and cool, some with plunge pools and the beachfront restaurant and the Gary Rhodes restaurant are outstanding.

For me, these three are the luxury hotels, but there are also Sandals and Royalton if you like big all-inclusive hotels with everything going on. There are also boutique hotels, such as 473 Boutique Resort and Laluna. Small, intimate and in glorious settings, they are great honeymoon options. For families, the quirky Mount Cinnamon is a hotel with amazing views and is competitively priced.

In my opinion, Grenada has it all and if you want a true Caribbean vibe, this is a perfect choice.
