Archives for March 2024

I’ve just returned from a trip to Queensland, and I can tell you that now is the perfect time to travel to this amazing part of Australia. In fact, there’s never a bad time to visit this gorgeous state, as it enjoys year-round sunshine and balmy temperatures. However, the exchange rate is very much in our favour, meaning that everything seems really cheap in comparison to the cost of living in the UK right now. Absolute luxury hotel rooms for £150 a night? Yes, please! Eating out, fine wines, great shopping at half the price you’d pay in London.

My focus was on sustainable travel, and I’m pleased to report that eco practices are very much in place everywhere and there’s huge awareness about preserving the planet and its wildlife. In Queensland, people love the great outdoors and enjoy it whenever they can. They want to keep their beautiful beaches, mountains and rainforests in peak condition and protect the wildlife that inhabits them.

So, what is there to see and do? Great stretches of beach, such as Noosa Beach, with beautiful sand, yes, but also mountains to hike and rain forests to visit, usually on marked walkways. You don’t just walk into the wild hinterland, as there’s wildlife out there and dangerous plants, but don’t worry, it is safe to visit as long as you follow the rules and stick to the paths.

A highlight for me was visiting the Australian Zoo, founded by the great conservationist Steve Irwin. Since his death, his wife and family have carried on the good work of protecting indigenous animals. It’s not a zoo as we know it and it’s amazing to get up close with the likes of kangaroos, possums, koalas and wombats, knowing they are being properly cared for.

The Gold Coast is where serious surfers head to and it is super cool, as you’d imagine. Lots of fancy high-rise apartments and hotels here. I visited the former Versace Hotel, now the Imperial Hotel and even saw the suite where Beyoncé stayed. Very glamorous and right now you can stay here for the same price you’d pay for a modest four-star hotel in the UK!

Brisbane itself is an amazing city, simply buzzing with excitement as it prepares to host the 2032 Olympic Games. New hotels are going up everywhere and the skyline is impressive, especially from the top of the Brisbane Bridge! The city is bursting with restaurants, bars and cafés and it has great shopping and museums. It is also very walkable. I loved it.

I definitely need to mention one particular hotel, the Crystalbrook Vincent, which stood out for me as a model eco-friendly hotel. They have thought of just about everything, from coat hangers made of recycled plastic bottles to recycling bins in the rooms, even calculating how their staff travel to and from work. Not only that, but it also sits right under the Brisbane Bridge, with stunning views, particularly at night when the bridge is lit up. The hotel walls are simply covered with beautiful art, so it’s almost like a cross between an art museum and a hotel. Spectacular!

So, Brisbane and its surrounding areas get a huge thumbs up from me. Please contact me if you’d like to know more.

There seems to be an exponential rise in demand for singles holidays, or solo travel as it’s more often referred to now. We are not necessarily talking about hedonistic holidays for the young and beautiful, thumping club music by the pool or unofficial dating opportunities! No, we are talking about people of all ages choosing to travel alone. Why? There may be many explanations for this current trend. With our frenetic pace of life, some people just want to escape and be by themselves. All by themselves, with the chance to breathe in fresh air, take stock, reflect, make plans, shut out the world, forget their problems for a while.

As travellers, many people have become braver, particularly women travelling alone. It is easier to fly alone, check into a hotel alone and dine alone without having to face raised eyebrows. This was always off putting and uncomfortable for women and I, for one, am happy to report that I feel safer and confident travelling alone on business and no longer in fear of attracting unwanted attention.

Some people dream of taking on a big adventure all by themselves. Maybe trekking in Machu Pichu or climbing a mountain in Africa. Now we are constantly on our phones and computers, what a treat to be able to completely alone with our thoughts and able to admire wonderful scenery without having to make idle chat. By contrast,  if we choose, we never actually have to be able alone. We have the option of taking selfies and chatting to our family and friends from the remotest of places! An adventure like this can be done solo or in a group. Even with group tours, you often have the option of dipping in and out of the daily activities. If you want to take the morning off, you  can lie by the pool or sit in a café. There is so much more flexibility these days.

Other solo travellers might opt for a spa holiday or a beach holiday where there is no schedule, nowhere you have to be and no timetable to adhere to. How refreshing! How incredible would it be to sit around the pool and read a book, completely undisturbed? Then, come the evening, you might want to join other singles in the bar or restaurant. Or not, as the case may be.

If you have a particular interest, such as cooking, a sport, history or music, you can join like-minded travellers on a themed holiday. I know people who have made lifelong friends on such trips, as you already share a common interest. And yes, if you want to, you may just find love.

Cruising is another option and single women need not fear they are going to be approached by a gentleman offering to be their dance partner for the duration of the cruise! Unless you require this service, of course!

Many single holidays carry a single supplement, this is true. If a hotel has two paying guests in a room, of course, they make more money than selling that room to a single traveller. But many companies now negotiate special rates for single travellers or even advertise that they carry no single supplements. If you are travelling independently, try going off-season when the hotels are glad of your business and may be persuaded to give you a very good room rate.

Where can you travel to on your own? Just about anywhere, these days! Here are a few examples:

Last November, Wildlife SOS celebrated the fifth anniversary of the inauguration of its Elephant Hospital in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. A pioneering facility in the realm of elephant welfare, five years on, the hospital stands strong on its unwavering commitment made towards healing elephants found in distress. With a skilled team of professionals and advanced apparatus, the Wildlife SOS Elephant Hospital has redefined the standards of elephant care globally.

Holly was the first elephant to receive medical care at the Elephant Hospital. A blind and injured begging elephant with septic wounds all over her body, when the team found her she was in great discomfort and suffering from osteoarthritis, as well as walking on thinning footpads. The Wildlife SOS veterinarians used laser therapy to soothe her pain, combined with hydrotherapy in the hospital’s hydraulic pool, to accelerate her healing.

Since Holly, nearly 20 elephants have been rescued and treated with the Elephant Hospital’s state-of-the-art amenities. The facility sits in 50 acres and has a digital weighing scale for accurate health assessments, diagnostic equipment such as thermal imaging and ultrasonic massagers, and an in-house pathology lab so the team can detect diseases at an early stage.

The hospital is designed to impart specialised care to geriatric elephants, as the majority of its patients have spent a lifetime walking on concrete and tarmac roads as begging elephants, temple elephants or as riders in the tourism industry.

The staff don’t just focus on the physical healing however, they also acknowledge the emotional intelligence of elephants and provide structural and food-based enrichments, pool time, dust and mud baths, and daily walks to exercise these beautiful creatures’ bodies and refresh their minds.

Five years on, Wildlife SOS has created a path for the well-being of distressed elephants but, says the charity, there is still a long way to go to promote sensitive care to these majestic animals.

I’m planning to take my family on holiday to southern Spain this summer during the school holidays, but we’d like to take the train from London over a couple of days and I’m confused about how best to book it. Because it’s the school holidays I’m keen to book as early as possible, but I understand some train tickets aren’t available until a couple of months out. I don’t want to miss out on accommodation by waiting until nearer the time we’re due to go, what can I do?

James Balding

Melissa: Train travel to Spain is a really great idea, in support of both reducing carbon emissions and taking a slower approach to travel with the joy that brings. Booking with Charitable Travel means we can offer options with tour operators who can confirm train tickets much further in advance than a customer booking rail-only direct with the train operators. You can plan knowing that your arrangements are firm for both rail and accommodation.

The other key advantage is that you have support on hand during your journey should a connection be missed by unplanned operational delays. With this help, you’ll never be alone in a rail station with no onward plans. I took a quick look with one of our favourite travel partners who offers an 11-night rail trip including seven nights in Estepona on the Costa del Sol with four nights in stops en route each way to break up the journey, travelling 18 August 2024, and the price for two rooms for two adults and two children under 12 comes in at around £1,479pp. Eleven nights flying came in just £300pp cheaper but created 83% more CO2 emissions and is way less fun!

I've recently started volunteering in my local community, mostly with animals and wildlife. I'm really interested in working with exotic wildlife - do you know of anywhere I can do this on holiday? And would I need to have a work visa or specific qualifications to do so? I'm open to ideas, I'd just like to do some good on my next trip!

Verity Jones

Melissa:  For volunteering with exotic wildlife on your holiday, it’s essential to choose programmes that prioritise the welfare of animals and have a positive impact on conservation efforts. Charitable Travel has a clear policy on proper engagement with wildlife which means, among other points, no contact so please be mindful of that. Destinations such as Costa Rica, South Africa, India and Thailand offer opportunities to work nearby wildlife under carefully guided conditions. Requirements vary by programme; some may require specific skills, while others provide training on-site.

A work visa might not be necessary for volunteer work, but this depends on the destination’s regulations.
Always check visa requirements and the credentials of the volunteering programme to ensure it aligns with ethical and sustainable practices. Charitable Travel has a range of volunteering opportunities for while you’re on holiday
